Finnish men are usually an enigma for the majority of ladies around the world. That’s why I was so surprised to hear the interest of so many American women looking for Finnish men. 

A few days ago, after a conversation I had with some friends, I started thinking about my encounter with Finnish guys, and I have to admit that I usually had a very pleasant experience while dating them. 

That’s why I’ve decided to put an end to this mystery surrounding them, and tell you as much as I know about typical Finnish men and share some tips for dating a Finnish man.

Physical Appearance

Finnish males very often get mixed with Swedes because they do have similar genetics (around 75%), and both nations are rather pale, blond, and very tall. 

What’s interesting to notice about typical Finnish guys is that they usually have very fine hair, and that’s why they keep it short in most cases. 

However, this doesn’t mean that the facial hair is lacking, on the contrary. So, if you like your sexy Finnish men bearded, you’re in for a treat!

Another very attractive characteristic is the bone structure of their face that’s very masculine, with the strong, sexy jawline and brow bone. Their eyes are almost always blue or light-gray while being smaller and mysterious.

The majority of Finns are blond and tall, but their race is not homogeneous. It’s actually a mixture of about five different ethnic groups, which means that there’s a possibility to meet Finnish guys that have brown hair and that aren’t too tall.

When talking to my friends, I was so surprised to hear about all the Finnish men stereotypes, which actually got me thinking about my experiences. 

After listening to their assumption that the majority of Finns are cold, distant, and even aggressive, I’ve decided it’s high time someone did them some justice.

Today, you’re about to find out as much as possible about them, all the details, personality traits as well as what are Finnish men like in relationships. 

1. Gentlemen rating

You must be wondering, “If dating a Finnish man is so great, how come their score for being gentlemen is only 8?” and it’s perfectly understandable you may think that. 

While being very nice, polite and pleasant to talk to, Finns don’t really have the specific gender roles as the majority of the world does. Now, I don’t think that’s a bad thing, on the contrary. 

The only drawback of their attitude may be the lack of “gentlemen behavior” that some ladies are used to. 

Personally, I don’t mind getting my own coat and opening the door by myself. Still, I know that for some of my girlfriends, that’s unacceptable, especially on the first dates.

One of them even got really angry at a guy for not offering to pay the bill once they went out. She felt so offended that she gave him an attitude for the rest of the date. 

I love my friend so much, but I honestly told her that she was exaggerating and owed him an apology. That’s why I don’t think that she would enjoy dating Finnish men at all.

Also, they are very shy and can’t flirt, even when they are very attractive, which I very often find cute. But if you’re expecting to go to a bar/pub/club and have hot Finnish guys hitting on you non-stop, you’ll be disappointed.

This is a refreshment compared to Brazilian or Italian guys that just won’t leave you alone even when you say “no” a million times. 

Finnish guys prefer being friends first and having a normal conversation with you before asking you out. 

However, when it comes to Finnish men in bed, I must admit that they are very gentle and patient. They will never rush you or insist on doing something you don’t like. 

When you meet Finnish men, you’ll notice right off the bat that they’re very respectful and don’t mind if you initiate the conversation or make the first step, just like the Austrian guys.

2. Integrity

Even though Finns aren’t nationally pure but the mix between 5 different ethnicities, hence the variety when it comes to looks, they do have a very strong sense of national identity. 

They are always proud of their roots and love being recognized for the success of their athletes, especially rally drivers. 

And while they usually don’t expect anyone to know about their country’s achievements and very often assume no one actually knows about them, Finns love reading about Finland in a foreign country, and they feel very proud.

One thing surprised me a lot when I was hanging out with my Finnish boyfriend’s friends. On one occasion, we started to talk about politics, and they got very passionate about the good and the bad in their country.

And while they openly had a few critiques towards Finland (as any nation has towards its own country), they got immediately offended when another foreign friend joined them. 

I found this super-strange and asked my boyfriend about it. He admitted that they often react like that when visitors have complaints.

3. Loyalty

It’s a common stereotype to think that just because Finns don’t talk a lot and seem a bit reserved that they lie or hide something. I have to admit that I had a similar opinion before dating them.

What I discovered is that they are very respectful towards the partner. Even though they find small talk unnecessary, when it comes to important things regarding the relationships, they will feel free to share their emotions.

That’s why they are usually very loyal and try their best to make the relationship work. Of course, there are always examples of Finns that cheat, but those are very rare situations. 

If it happens that your Finnish boyfriend cheats on you, he’ll most likely tell you right away and end the relationship. 

After a couple of months, they can usually already tell if the relationship is serious or not and end it if they don’t think it’ll work.

So, if you were worried about what are Finnish guys like in relationships, rest assured that they will treat you as a friend first, which means that they will be loyal and honest if they want something serious with you.

4. Honesty

As said, your Finnish date/partner will be completely honest with you in every aspect of life. You won’t have to worry about what’s on his mind because he’ll share it with you sooner or later.

Even though they are quiet and sometimes seem reserved, the problems will be solved through honest conversations. 

And while they may not share their emotions every second of the day and tell you “I love you” whenever they see you, they will prove it through little things and complete honesty in your relationship (both friendly and romantic).

5. How protective they are?

I have to be honest, this is one of the traits that I still can’t figure out quite right myself. I’ve never witnessed any unpleasant situation where I could determine “what are Finnish men like,” in that sense.

Having said that, one thing’s for sure, I always felt safe when I was with my Finnish boyfriend. So, I suppose they are protective, or at least they make you feel safe and sound, which is also an admirable characteristic.

6. Are they resourceful?

One of the best qualities of Finnish guys is that they are hard-working, professional, and very often perfectionists. This means that they give 100% at work and try to provide a decent life for their family.

While Finns don’t have gender roles that *must* be respected, but they give their best both at work and home with house chores, they still like to bring money to the table and have enough for a nice life. 

Also, women are expected to work too, since gender equality is a completely normal thing there.

Another reason why Finns like to earn a lot of money is their love for traveling as well as sports such as skiing and rally, which are expensive.

7. Maturity

I have to admit that the deepest conversations I had were with Finns. Everything A to Z about them is the reflection of mature and serious thoughts and behavior.

Your Finnish guy may not speak a lot and seem silent, but he’ll surely know how to have a mature conversation when needed. So, expect grown-up, serious attitude towards important things in life. 

It may seem unusual, but another sign of maturity for me is the ability to laugh at yourself.

All the Finns I dated had a more-or-less realistic image of themselves. If they consider something a flaw, they don’t get mad when someone mentions it, but they join and make jokes about it. 

I consider this a big plus, and that’s one of their best traits, in my opinion.

8. Self-confidence

It’s such a shame that Finnish guys don’t have higher self-confidence because they definitely have reasons for it. They are almost always very shy, especially around new people.
